Offer Free Trials

WHMCS allows you to easily configure free trials for your products. You can set up free trials that automatically terminate a set number of days after ordering or begin charging the full price after a set number of billing cycles.

To set up a free trial, you must:

  1. Configure the applicable product, if it does not already exist.
  2. Configure the promotion code.

Auto-Terminating Free Trials

Auto-terminating free trials allow a customer to try your services on a temporary account. When the free trial ends, WHMCS will terminate the account.

To configure an auto-terminating free trial:

  1. Create or edit a product at Configuration () > System Settings > Products/Services.
  2. In the Pricing tab, configure the pricing for your free trial:
    • To collect client payment details during the free trial, enter the length of your free trial in days for Auto Terminate/Fixed Term and set Payment Type to a paid option. This allows you to offer a free trial while still obtaining client details for security and fraud checks.
    • To not collect client payment details during the free trial, set the Payment Type value to Free.
  3. For Termination Email, select the email to send to clients when their free trial period ends and the system terminates the account.
    You can create a new email template for free trials at Configuration () > System Settings > Email Templates.
  4. Go to Configuration () > System Settings > Promotions.
  5. Click Add New.
  6. Enter the promotion code freetrial.
  7. Change the value to 100.00.
  8. Select Monthly.
  9. Set the remaining settings according to the specifics of your promotion.
  10. Click Create Promotion.

Clients can either enter the promotion code during checkout or use the following link to apply the free trial automatically:

Recurring Free Trials

You can also offer a free trial for a set number of billing cycles. After the free trial period ends, the system begins charging clients the full price.

For example, to set up a trial3months code for a free three-month trial on a monthly billing cycle:

  1. Create or edit a product at Configuration () > System Settings > Products/Services.
  2. In the Pricing tab, configure the pricing for your product. This is the price that your customer will pay after the trial ends.
  3. Go to Configuration () > System Settings > Promotions.
  4. Click Add New.
  5. Enter the promotion code trial3months.
  6. For Type, select Percentage.
  7. For Recurring, check Enable - Recur For and enter the number of billing cycles.
  8. For Value, enter 100.00.
  9. In the Applies To section, select the products to which the promotion applies.
  10. In the Billing Cycles section, select Monthly.
  11. Set the remaining settings according to the specifics of your promotion.
  12. Click Create Promotion.

After three billing cycles, the system begins charging clients the full price for the product.
