Permanent Automatic Update Failures
Problem
An unattended automatic update record shows a permanent Failed status in the Update History table at Utilities > Update WHMCS, and the system does not retry that version again.
Cause
The system attempts an update up to three times: the initial attempt plus two retries. After the third failed attempt, the update record moves to a permanent Failed status. A fatal error while the system prepares the patch sets the update to the Failed status immediately, with no retries.
Troubleshooting
Check the Activity Log at Configuration () > System Logs for the failure reason from the final attempt. Most permanent failures trace back to a file-permission or connectivity problem that persisted across all three attempts.
Solution
To recover from a permanent failure:
- Correct the underlying problem, which is usually a permissions or connectivity issue.
- Wait for the next maintenance release, which the system applies on your normal schedule.
Update manually if you want to apply the current maintenance release immediately.
